Get into nature and take home a memory of your time in the Scottish Borders with a super-comfy Go Wild Scotland wildlife ranger hoodie
Join a wildlife ranger for a full day’s adventure on land and water.
You’ll spend the morning paddling a kayak on the beautiful St Mary’s Loch – or for the even more adventurous, there’s stand up paddle boarding. Don’t worry if it’s your first time – everyone gets a life jacket and a wetsuit.
The loch sits in sensational Southern Uplands scenery and the short journey there is an opportunity to spot wildlife along the way. We often see buzzards sitting on the telegraph poles beside the road and red squirrels can sometimes be seen from the road.
From late April onwards there is the chance to see ospreys, which soar overhead and fish on the loch. This is golden eagle territory too, with nesting sites in the local area.
We’ll take lunch at the loch side cafe and there will be time for a look at the little art gallery there before making the short return journey to Selkirk to spend the rest of the day at Mauldsheugh Wood concentrating on activities from our Woodland Wellbeing experience.
Mauldsheugh is our community wildlife project, where you’ll spend the afternoon finding out about the nature of the woods and getting involved in our conservation work – we’re currently working on a forest school for use by the community and local school groups.
Enjoy a woodland walk, then top up the bird feeders and sit back to watch the wonderful bird life of the woods. Great spotted woodpeckers and nuthatches are regular visitors but we’ve counted more than 40 species of bird in the wood in the last year, including great spotted woodpeckers.
You can keep an eye out for the roe deer that live in the wood. Other visitors spotted over the last year include pine marten, red squirrel and otter. Order the journalling add on and you’ll get your own nature journal and a lesson in wildlife recording.
There’s also an opportunity to try your hand at a craft activity like making a bird feeder, or willow weaving, and get involved in conservation volunteering by helping us improve the habitat.
Prices start at £440 for a private group session for up to four people. Additional adults are charged at £100pp, with additional children £75pp. Please note that prices are based on the use of your own transport: we can arrange minibus, coach or luxury vehicles at an additional cost. Contact us for details.
We run our nature adventures to give more people a chance to enjoy the wildlife of southern Scotland and to help cover the cost of our community nature and wildlife projects. All profits go back into the community interest company to enable us to continue to operate Mauldsheugh Wood, along with nature clubs, school visits and collaborations with other community groups.
