A beginners guide to nature photography

Tips and advice on how to find and photograph the plants and animals that live in Mauldsheugh Wood

With the improvement in camera phone technology and more digital cameras on the market than ever before, it’s never been easier to learn photography.

Photographing the nature around us makes us stop and take notice of what’s there, helping us to become more mindful in our walks.

In this two hour session, a wildlife ranger will take you on a walk around the beautiful Mauldsheugh Wood in Selkirk, offering tips and advice on how to find and photograph the plants and animals that live there.

These sessions are for beginners. You don’t need to be a brilliant photographer or have fancy equipment – a simple phone camera will do.

Mauldsheugh Wood sits on the outskirts of Selkirk at the heart of the Scottish Borders. We’ve recorded more than 40 bird species in the wood, including great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch, kingfisher, tawny owl, goldcrest and even little egret.

Ospreys have been seen overhead and the Scottish Borders is now home to a growing golden eagle population.

If you’re lucky you may catch sight of  some of the roe deer that live in the wood, which is also home to badger, fox, stoat and bank voles, among many other species. We had our first sighting of a red squirrel last year and really lucky visitors have spotted the otters which swim past and occasionally make their way through the trees.

Prices start at £200 for a private group session for up to four people. Additional adults are £50pp, with children £35pp. Please note that prices are based on the use of your own transport: we can arrange minibus, coach or luxury vehicles at an additional cost. Contact us for details.

We run our nature experiences to give more people a chance to enjoy the wildlife of southern Scotland and to help cover the cost of our community nature and wildlife projects. All profits go back into the community interest company to enable us to continue to operate Mauldsheugh Wood, along with nature clubs, school visits and collaborations with other community groups.
