Get into nature and take home a memory of your time in the Scottish Borders with a super-comfy Go Wild Scotland wildlife ranger hoodie
Fancy trying your hand at shooting but don’t want to harm wildlife? We’ve got just the nature day out for you: clay pigeon shooting and a woodland wellbeing experience.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve never picked up a shotgun before – this is fun day out for all the family. We recommend this for anyone 12 and over but for the younger family members there’s a virtual reality range where they can blast away in total safety.
We’ll kick the day off at Mauldsheugh Wood, our community woodland in Selkirk. From there we’ll make our way to a local estate for a 25 shot lesson with professional instructors who will help even the complete novice get the most out of the morning.
For anyone wondering about the plight of the clay pigeon, you can stop worrying – they’re just small clay discs fored up into the air above the trees: no wildlife is harmed!
We’ll take lunch in the clubhouse and then make the short journey to Selkirk to spend the rest of the day at Mauldsheugh Wood concentrating on activities from our Woodland Wellbeing experience.
Mauldsheugh is our community wildlife project, where you’ll spend the afternoon finding out about the nature of the woods and getting involved in our conservation work – we’re currently working on a forest school for use by the community and local school groups.
You can enjoy a woodland walk, then top up the bird feeders and sit back to watch the wonderful bird life of the woods. Great spotted woodpeckers and nuthatches are regular visitors but we’ve counted more than 40 species of bird in the wood in the lsat year, including jays.
You can keep an eye out for the roe deer that live in the wood. Other visitors spotted over the last year include pine marten, red squirrel and otter. Order the journalling add on and you’ll get your own nature journal and a lesson in wildlife recording.
There’s also an opportunity to try your hand at a craft activity like making a bird feeder, or willow weaving, and get involved in conservation volunteering by helping us improve the habitat.
Prices start at £480 for a private group session for up to four shooters. (Non-shooting child discount available.) Additional shooters are charged at £100pp, with additional non-shooting children £35. Please note that prices are based on the use of your own transport: we can arrange minibus, coach or luxury vehicles at an additional cost. Contact us for details.
We run our nature adventures to give more people a chance to enjoy the wildlife of southern Scotland and to help cover the cost of our community nature and wildlife projects. All profits go back into the community interest company to enable us to continue to operate Mauldsheugh Wood, along with nature clubs, school visits and collaborations with other community groups.
