Red Squirrel Add-on

Customise your nature adventure by adding on a morning in the woods in search of some of Scotland's iconic red squirrels.

We recommend this as a morning activity, when the squirrels are at their most active.

You’ll join a wildlife ranger on the lookout for red squirrels in a Scottish Borders forest.

While we can never guarantee sightings, we monitor these beautiful creatures in the local area and are familiar with their feeding sites.

We like to start out with a walk through the local forest where we have monitoring stations for red squirrel (and pine marten) populations.

Most of the pictures and video on this page were taken by us in locations around Selkirk (the wee squirrel at the top struck a pose for us over in neighbouring Dumfries and Galloway).

This activity is intended to be an add on package to replace  the conservation volunteer session at Mauldsheugh Wood.

Lunch will still be taken at the Waterwheel Cafe and there will be opportunities to learn about the local Golden Eagle release project. If there’s time left at the end of the day you are welcome to take a stroll through the community project at Mauldsheugh.

Please note that prices are based on the use of your own transport: we can arrange minibus, coach or luxury vehicles at an additional cost. Contact us for details.

We run our nature adventures to give more people a chance to enjoy the wildlife of southern Scotland and to help cover the cost of our community nature and wildlife projects. All profits go back into the community interest company to enable us to continue to operate Mauldsheugh Wood, along with nature clubs, school visits and collaborations with other community groups.
