Heron

Herons nest in colonies, known as heronries, usually building their nests high up in trees. A single tree can host as many as 10 nests, though they will also nest among reeds.

They can often be seen standing on one leg: this is known as unipedal resting and there are various theories for why they do it but the most likely seems that they are simply conserving body heat.

They live for around 15 years and are found on every continent apart from Antarctica.

The grey heron most often spotted in Scotland has grey, white and black plumage, long legs and a wingspan of up to 2m.

Herons are one of the loudest birds on the river, with a piercing cry when disturbed.

They mostly eat fish but will also target amphibians and small mammals. Herons can sometimes be seen standing over mole hills before striking.

Plant life: Sycamore

Sycamores prefer to grow near water and their V-shaped seeds spiral down like helicopters over a wide area.

Bees are the main pollinators of sycamore, attracted to the nectar in its spring flowers.

Sycamores are not native to the UK but are believed to have first been introduced by the Romans.

They can grow to 35m tall and live for anything up to 400 years.

Their leaves are similar to those of the field maple and they are often covered in aphids, which in turn attract ladybirds and other insects.
