This full day adventure takes you through the spectacular scenery of the Scottish Borders and into the Kielder Forest in search of ospreys and red squirrels.
You’ll be picked up by experienced 4×4 drivers and transported in the comfort of seven-seater Land Rover Discoveries (maximum five guests per vehicle).
The day includes a hawk walk (or owl experience in the winter season) and off road driving through the forest.
And as with all of our adventures, for every away day booked, we’ll donate a nature education session for a school or charity of your choice.
You’ll be accompanied by a wildlife ranger who will help you to get the most out of the day.
We’ll be looking out for ospreys (from late spring to early autumn) and red squirrels in particular, but keeping an eye open for anything else that’s moving about.
The forests are home to pine martens and there are golden eagles too in the skies above.
We’ll provide binoculars and spotting scopes to give you a great chance to watch the ospreys that nest in the region and will take a look at an area where they are known to fish in the hope of spotting a bird in action. These birds migrate to the UK from Africa and usually start to arrive in late March before heading south again in September.
And to make sure you are guaranteed to get up close with birds of prey, we’ll spend some of the morning walking through the countryside in the company of a magnificent Harris Hawk – and you can even feed the bird from your hand as it swoops past (available from April to October). In the off-season, we can still offer the opportunity to get hands on experience with an owl encounter session.
We’ll take lunch at a local restaurant before heading off through the forest looking for wildlife. Then it is back through the spectacular Borders scenery and drop off at your destination.
We run our nature adventures to give more people a chance to enjoy the wildlife of southern Scotland and to help cover the cost of our community nature and wildlife projects. All profits go back into the community interest company to enable us to continue to operate our Mauldsheugh Wood community project, along with nature clubs, school visits and collaborations with other community groups.
